Forest management

Sylva Nova manages forests in Belgium and France on behalf of private and public owners. The forests entrusted to Sylva Nova, on a permanent or ad-hoc basis, for the long or medium term, are managed in full compliance with local regulations and the strictest sustainability standards (FSC®, PEFC).

Sylva Nova has chosen to build up a portfolio of its own forests in order to put its traditional and forward-thinking silvicultural methods into practice. Sylva Nova has its own forest observation and monitoring laboratory in Belgium and France, in various silvicultural regions.

  • Argenteau (BE – 35 Ha): multifunctional management of a peri-urban forest open to the public. Adaptation of management practices to incorporate public expectations and the constraints associated with very high visitor traffic. Implementation of a participatory Living Lab approach, in partnership with AgroParisTech. With support from D’Ieteren.
  • Mirepoix (FR – 80 Ha): Extensive and sustainable production of high-quality timber, with a strong focus on all the ecosystem services expected from a balanced forest. Key focus on landscape integration, social benefits, and fire prevention. In partnership with Gembloux Agro Bio Tech. With support from D’Ieteren.
  • Vertheuil  – St Germain d’Esteuil (FR – 41 Ha): restoration and enhancement of degraded stands and heathlands under high wildlife pressure. Research into innovative silvicultural designs and approaches enabling forest regeneration without fencing or artificial practices.
  • Vézelay (FR – 10 Ha): irregularization and diversification of monospecific coniferous stands through sustainable thinning methods that promote natural regeneration.
  • Castel-Sarrazin (FR – 5.5 Ha): innovative poplar cultivation under continuous cover aimed at producing high-quality wood through alternating rotations without clear-cutting. Environmental benefits (carbon sequestration, biodiversity, landscape) as well as economic benefits (increased and more stable net income and reduced risks).
